Battling Spring Tantrums One Bowl at a Time

Springtime in Minnesota is like a woman going through perimenopause: one day it’s hot, the next it’s cold. It’s unpredictable, moody, and full of surprises. The morning might be calm and sunny, but by dinnertime, storms are brewing — rain, snow, even a tornado could be on the horizon. Much like me, a woman in her 50s, just trying to figure out what to wear so I’m not too hot, too cold, too itchy, too uncomfortable...or just plain unhappy.
When spring rolls around, I’m always excited to fire up the grill again — but I know better than to count on it. Best-laid plans don’t always survive a Minnesota spring! Thankfully, my husband has always said my best meals are my “impromptu” creations, when the original plan goes sideways and I have to whip up something new on the fly.
That’s exactly how our beloved Asparagus Soup was born.
Normally, I’d have asparagus ready to grill alongside a juicy steak. But one blustery Sunday evening, outdoor cooking was definitely off the table. Staring at the fresh asparagus in my fridge, I knew I had to save it from going bad — and I wanted something soul-warming to match the chilly mood.
Enter Asparagus Soup.

First of all, it’s green. And while the world has recently gained a better appreciation for anything green and pink (thanks to a certain blockbuster movie), back then, my kids equated green with “yuck.” But after just a few hesitant bites, they realized it was actually more like “Yum!”
In our family, “Yummers” became the name we gave to our all-time favorite recipes — the ones that never let us down. As I continue this blog, I’ll introduce you to more of these Yummers that I promise will earn a regular spot in your recipe rotation!
